If you lose your passport or there are errors in the passport information, apply for a reissuance.
Passport reissuance
- Those who have been issued a passport can apply for a reissue to the Minister of Foreign Affairs if they meet any of the following conditions (Articles 7(1) and 11(1) of the Passport Act):
1. Where corrections or changes are needed for the type of passport, issuing country, passport number, issuance date, expiration date, issuing authority, name, nationality, gender, date of birth, and photo of the passport holder;
2. Where the issued passport is lost; or
3. Where the issued passport is damaged.
※ Those who have a valid passport and wish to get a new passport or reissue it due to reasons 1 and 3 above must return the passport they have (Article 19(2) of the Passport Act).
Payment of fees
- Those who wish to reissue a passport must pay a fee to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, if applying for a reissue through the head of a local self-governing body that handles passport affairs, the fee must be paid to that head (Article 22(1) of the Passport Act).
- Passport reissuance fees can be paid in cash, cash payment proof tokens, or by credit card. However, at overseas diplomatic missions, you can pay in local currency or US currency (Article 38(1) of the Enforcement Decree of the Passport Act).
- The following individuals may be exempted from the passport reissuance fee (Article 38(2) of the Enforcement Decree of the Passport Act):

Exemption from Fee Payment

▪ Refugees in need of relief

▪ Those who lost or damaged their passport, etc. because of natural disasters and need a reissue

▪ Those who were incorrectly issued a passport, etc. through no fault of their own and need a reissue or detail change

▪ Others whom the Minister of Foreign Affairs deems in need of fee exemption

- Passport reissuance fees are generally nonrefundable. However, fees will be refunded if the reissuance of the passport is refused or restricted, or if the fee was clearly paid in error (Article 38(3) of the Enforcement Decree of the Passport Act).
Passport reissuance and receipt
- Passports can be received directly by the individual, through a representative, or by mail. However, for online passport reissuance, the individual must visit the chosen receiving agency at the time of application, show their ID, and receive it directly (Article 7(1) of the Enforcement Rules of the Passport Act).
- If a representative who did not apply for the passport reissuance receives the passport, they must submit a copy of the applicant’s ID and a power of attorney, and show their own ID (Article 7(2) of the Enforcement Rules of the Passport Act).
- If you wish to receive your passport by mail, you must indicate this intention when applying for a reissue, provide necessary information such as a deliverable address, and bear the postage cost (Article 7(3) of the Enforcement Rules of the Passport Act).
- A passport that has been returned for reissuance will lose its validity once the requested passport is reissued (Article 13(1)4 of the Passport Act).
