Type of child care centers
National or public child care centers
- A national or public child care center refers to a child care center established and operated by the State or local governments (Subparagraph 1 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act).
※ A established and operated by the State or the heads of local governments for relevant public officials and nonpublic officials who have concluded a labor contract with the State or with the heads of local governments is a workplace child care center (Subparagraph 4 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act).
- The State or a local government may entrust a corporation, organization, or individual with the operation of a national or public child care center established (Article 24 (2) of the Child Care Act).
A child care center of social welfare corporations
- A child care center of social welfare corporations refers to a child care center established and operated by social welfare corporations established under the Social Welfare Services Act (hereinafter “social welfare corporations”) (Subparagraph 2 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act).
Child care centers of corporations, organizations, etc.
- A child care center of corporations, organizations, etc. refers to a child care center established and operated by various kinds of corporations (nonprofit corporations, excluding social welfare corporations), organizations, etc., which falls under any of the following (Subparagraph 3 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act and Article 18-2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Child Care Act).
1. Child care centers established and operated by educational foundations under the Early Childhood Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and the Higher Education Act
2. Child care centers established and operated by religious organizations
3. Child care centers established and operated by the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service under the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act
4. Child care centers established and operated by education and training facilities under Subparagraph 2 of Article 21 (2) of the Child Care Act
5. Child care centers equivalent to those prescribed in the above subparagraphs 1 through 4, which are determined by the Minister of Health and Welfare
Workplace child care centers
- The term “workplace child care center” means a child care center established and operated by a business owner independently or jointly in a workplace or nearby area and in a dense residential area where company housing is located (Subparagraph 4 of Article 10 and Article 14 (1) of the Child Care Act).
Home-based child care center
- A home-based child care center refers to a child care center established and operated by individuals at their homes and in places corresponding thereto (Subparagraph 5 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act).
Cooperative child care center
- A cooperative child care center refers to a child care center established and operated by associations (limited to nonprofit associations) founded by at least 11 guardians of infants and young children, or by 11 guardians and child care teachers and staff (Subparagraph 6 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act, Article 9 (1) of the Enforcement Rules of the Child Care Act, and Subparagraph 1-2 (b) of Attached Table 1).
Private child care center
- The term “private child care center” means a private child care center other than a national or public child care center, a corporate child care center, a workplace child care center, a home-based child care center, or a cooperative child care center (Subparagraph 7 of Article 10 of the Child Care Act).
