Standards of Livestock Product Labeling
Standards of Livestock Product Labeling
- Livestock products, native livestock, and import livestock products to be sold must be labeled in accordance with the Labeling Standards for Foods (Notice of Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation).
- Livestock products must indicate the following information (Article 4(1)-1 of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods and Article 3(1) of the Enforcement Rule thereof).
1. Product name, content and raw material
2. Name and location of business
3. Precautions for consumer safety
4. Date of manufacture, use-by-date, or quality maintenance period
5. Food type and item report number
6. Ingredient name and content
7. Material of container and packaging
8. Irradiation treatment indication (mark)
9. Storage or handling method
10. Type of meat, part name, grade and slaughterhouse name
11. Date of packaging
- Persons obligated to label livestock products, information labeled, and labeling method such as type sizes and locations shall be prescribed by Attached Table 3 of the Enforcement Rule of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods (Article 4(2) of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods).
No sale of livestock products that do not meet the Standards above
- Livestock products that do not have the above-mentioned label or that violate the above labeling method must not be sold, nor manufactured, processed, repackaged in smaller amounts, imported, packaged, stored, displayed or transported for sale, nor used for business (Article 4(3) of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods).
- Those who violate this may be subject to administrative actions, such as corrective order or business license revocation, and criminal punishment (imprisonment of up to three years or fines of up to KRW 30 million) (Articles 14-1, 15 (Subparagraph 3), 16(1)-1, 16(3)-1, 17(1)-1 and 28-1 (Subparagraph 1) of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods).
Indication of Warnings for Consumer Safety
- A business that handles, manufactures, processes, or imports livestock products must indicate warnings for consumer safety on such products (Article 4 of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, Article 5(1) and Attached Table 2 of the Enforcement Rule thereof).
Prohibition of ambiguous or confusing labeling and advertising
- No person shall falsely label or advertise livestock products, etc. with respect to the matters prescribed by Article 2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, such as the name, manufacturing methods, or ingredients, in any of the following manners (Article 8(1) of Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods).
- Those who violate this may be subject to administrative actions, such as corrective order or business license revocation, and criminal punishment (imprisonment of up to five years or fines of up to 50 million won) (Articles 14-3, 15(3), 16(1)-2, 16(3)-2, 17(1)-2 and 27-2 of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods).
