Marine Product Quality Certification
What is the marine product qualitycertification system?
- “Seafoodquality certification system” is to improve the quality of marine products andprotect consumers, and the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries should implements aquality certification system (Paragraph 1 of Article 14 of the Agricultural andFishery Products Quality Control Act).
Application for Marine Product QualityCertification
- A partyseeking quality certification of marine products shall submit the followingdocuments to the head of the National Fishery Products Quality ManagementService or the head of an agency designated as a quality certification agencyin accordance with the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act(hereinafter referred to as the quality certification agency) (Article 30 ofthe Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products QualityControl Act).
· Applicationfor quality certification of marine products (Attached Template 12 of theEnforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products QualityControl Act).
· Plan on theproduction of an item applied for
· Outline of themanufacturing process of an item applied for, including step-by-stepspecifications
Standards of Marine Product QualityCertification
- All of thefollowing standards must be met to acquire a quality certification (Paragraph 1of Article 29 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and FisheryProducts Quality Control Act).
1. A marineproduct originating from a reputable source or recognized to be anextraordinary product
2. Productiontechnology, facilities, and supplies required for maintaining marine productquality
3. In-housequality control of production and shipping and follow-up management ofdistribution
Indication of Marine Product QualityCertification
- A party whoobtains a marine product quality certification can include the followingindications of marine product quality certification on the packaging orcontainer of the certified marine product (Paragraph 3 of Article 14 of theAgricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Attached Table 7 ofthe Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products QualityControl Act).

- A qualitycertification indication must be displayed on the outside of the packaging orcontainer of a certified product. If the product is sold without packaging, aquality certification tag can be attached to the product (Paragraph 3 ofArticle 32 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and FisheryProducts Quality Control Act).
- The validperiod of a quality certification is 2 years from the date of qualitycertification. However, if a period longer than 1 year from production toshipping is required, the valid period shall be 3 or 4 years, or a period setby the head of the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service basedon the duration of production (Paragraph 1 of Article 15 of the Agriculturaland Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Article 34 of the EnforcementRegulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
Prohibition of False Indications
- Mixing ofmarine products indicated as quality-certified products with marine products orprocessed marine products that are not quality-certified products for sale orin storage or display for sale is prohibited (Subparagraph 3 of Paragraph 2 ofArticle 29 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
- Violation ofthe above regulation shall be grounds for imprisonment of up to 3 years or afine of up to KRW 30 million (C. of Subparagraph 2 of Article 119 of theAgricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
