General travel standard
Where a road is divided into a roadway and a sidewalk, motor vehicles shall travel on the roadway.
- Drivers of motor vehicles shall travel along the roadway on roads that are divided into a sidewalk and a roadway; provided that when they drive a motor vehicle into or out of any place other than a road, they may cross the sidewalk (Article 13(1) of the Road Traffic Act).
- Penal provision (Article 156(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act, Attached Table 8 no.5, Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act, Attached Table 28 no.3 A. 20).

Cases in which it is permitted to travel along the center or the left-hand side of the road
- Drivers of motor vehicles and riders of horses shall travel along the part of the road that is situated to the right of the central line of the road. However, they may pass along the central or the left-hand side of the road in any of the following cases (Article 13(3) and (4) of the Road Traffic Act).
· In cases where the road is reserved exclusively for one-way traffic
· In cases where it is impossible for motor vehicles and horses to pass along the right-hand side of the road due to damage to the road, road construction works, and other impediments.
· In cases where a vehicle (driver) intends to overtake other motor vehicles travelling ahead of it on a road, and where the width of the right-hand lane is not more than 6 meters. However, the same shall not apply in the following cases.
√ In cases where it is impossible to recognize the right-hand side of the road.
√ In cases where it is feared to impede the traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
√ In cases where safety signs, etc. prohibit or restrict the passing of other motor vehicles driving ahead of it.
· In cases where the width of the right-hand side of the road is not sufficiently wide for motor vehicles and horses.
· In cases where the Commissioner of the Local Police Agency finds it necessary to designate a road section and traffic methods in order to prevent danger to traffic at the curve of a steeply sloping road, and along which motor vehicles and horses may pass according to such designation.

Types of motor vehicles assigned to each lane
- On roads with two or more lanes or one-way roads, each lane is assigned particular types of motor vehicles (Article 14(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Article 16(1) and Attached Table 9 of the Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act).
- When overtaking a motor vehicle, the next lane on the left-hand side of the designated lane shall be used (Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act, Attached table 9, note 2).
- Penal provision for failure to use the designated lanes (Article 156(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act, Attached Table 8 no.45, Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act, Attached Table 28).

Driving on exclusive lanes
- Categories of motor vehicles which are allowed to travel on exclusive lanes are designated (Article 15(2) of the Road Traffic Act, Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act, Article 9(1) and Attached Table 1).
· The following types of exclusive lanes have been designated (Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act, Attached table 1).
√ Bus exclusive lanes
√ High-occupancy vehicle exclusive lanes
√ Bicycle exclusive lanes
- Vehicles of other categories are permitted to travel on exclusive lanes in the following cases (Article 15(3) of the Road Traffic Act, Article 10 of the Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act).
· In cases where an emergency vehicle is travelling in an exclusive lane for its intended purpose.
· In cases where a taxi uses an exclusive lane for a moment in order to allow a passenger to get in or get out; provided that it does not hinder the traffic in the lane. In such cases, the taxi driver shall leave the lane as soon as the situation allows.
· In inevitable situations such as the demolition or construction of a road, etc.
- Penalprovision (subparagraph 1 of Article 156 of the RoadTraffic Act, subparagraphs 20 and22 of AttachedTable 8 and subparagraphs 2(c) and 3 of Attached Table 6 of the EnforcementDecree of the Road Traffic Act, and subparagraph 3(a) 12., 22. of AttachedTable 28 ofthe Enforcement Regulation of the Road Traffic Act).
