Prohibition of window tinting which can harm traffic safety
Standard of transmissivity of visible rays for car windows
- It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle (other than those used by security services for important persons, emergencies or funerals, etc.) whosefront windshield and window glass on the right and left sides of the driver’s seat pose a threat to traffic safety due to their sub-standard transmissivity of visible rays (Article 49(1)3 of the Road Traffic Act, Article 28 of the Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act).
· Front windshield: below 70%
· Window glass on the right and left sides of the driver's seat: below 40%
- In the event that a police officer(s) identifies a motor vehicle that violates the provision on the prohibition of tinting, the driver of the motor vehicle in question may be required to remove the infringing material on the spot or ordered to take the necessary measures. In such cases, when the driver fails to comply with the order, the police officer(s) may remove the infringing matters and take the necessary measures (Article 49(2) of the Road Traffic Act).
Penal provision
- A driver who violates the standard on the transmissivity of visible rays shall be punishable by a fine of up to KRW 20,000 (Article 160(2)1 of the Road Traffic Act, Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act, Attached Table 6, no.8)
