Overseas Koreans
School Admission of Children of Korean Nationals Residing Abroad, Etc.
Elementary/Middle School Admission
- The guardian of a minor or student who is a child of a Korean national residing abroad can apply for the admission or transfer of said child to the head of an elementary school in the school zone in which said child's residence is located (Subparagraph 2 of Paragraph 1 of Article 19 of the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary/Middle School Education Act).
- The guardian of a minor or student who is a child of a Korean national residing abroad can apply for the admission, transfer, or transfer admission of said child to the head of a district education office in the school district, or the head of a middle school in the middle school districts, where the child’s or student’s residence is located (Subparagraph 2 of Article 19(1) and Subparagraph 1 of Article 75(1) of the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary/Middle School Education Act).
High School Admission
- Individuals falling into any of the following categories are eligible for a school admission screening other than the first-term school admission screening and the second-term school admission screening(Paragraph 3 of Article 82 of the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary/Middle School Education Act).
· An individual who has completed a school curriculum of over 9 years in a foreign country or a school curriculum equivalent to elementary school and middle school
· An individual falling into any of the categories below who transferred to a middle school in Korea from a school in a foreign country and graduated
√ A student who returned to Korea after enrollment in a school in a foreign country for more than two years (limited to individuals who resided in a foreign country with their parents for more than two years)
√ Child of a scientist or professor who returned to Korea by invitation or recommendation of the government
√ Foreign student (if one or both parents are Korean nationals, a student who completed a middle school curriculum of over two years in a foreign country)
Quota and Special Screening for College Admission or Transfer
- When a Korean national residing abroad who has completed in a foreign country all of the curricula corresponding with elementary and middle school in Korea or a Korean national residing abroad who has not done so seeks admission or transfer to a college in Korea (all types of colleges including industrial college, teachers' college, vocational college, technical college, and remote college; postgraduate school excluded), separate criteria shall be implemented in addition to the criteria set forth by the college (Article 28(1) and Subparagraphs 2 and 7 of Article 29(2) of the Enforcement Decree of the High School Education Act).
- When a Korean national residing abroad who has completed in a foreign country all of the curricula corresponding with elementary, middle, and high school in Korea seeks admission, transfer, or re-admission to a postgraduate school in Korea, separate criteria shall by implemented in addition to the criteria set forth by the postgraduate school (Article 30(1) and Item 4 of Subparagraph 1 of 30(7) of the Enforcement Decree of the High School Education Act).
