Traceability Management
What is traceability management of agricultural products?
- Traceability management of agricultural products is the recording and management of the information of agricultural products from their production to their sale, so that if any issues are found in an agricultural product, the product can be traced to identify and rectify the cause of the issue (Subparagraph 7 of Article 2 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
Registration of Agricultural Products for Traceability Management
- Producers, distributors, and sellers of agricultural products produced for consumption who seek traceability management of their products must register their products by submitting the following documents to the head of the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (Paragraph 1 of Article 24 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Paragraph 1 of Article 46, Paragraph 1 of Article 47, and Attached Template 23 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act):
· Application for registration for traceability management of agricultural products
· Agricultural product traceability management plan
· Follow-up management plan, e.g. collection of faulty agricultural products
- The following information must be registered for traceability management (Paragraph 2 of Article 46 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act):

Valid Period of Registration
- The valid period of a registration for traceability management is 3 years from the date of registration. For ginseng products and medicinal crops, the valid periods are up to 5 years and up to 6 years, respectively (Paragraph 1 of Article 25 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Article 50 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
Indication of Traceability Management
- A party registered for traceability management can display on their agricultural products the ① label and ② indications below (Paragraph 6 of Article 24 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Subparagraph 2 of Attached Table 12 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).

▪ Origin: The region in which an agricultural product is produced, including the name of the city/province or city/county/district.

▪ Product name: Product name under Subparagraph 2 of Article 2 of the Act on the Protection of New Varieties of Plants to be indicated in accordance with Subparagraph 3 of Article 7(2) of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act.

▪ Weight/count: Actual weight and count of a single packaged unit

▪ Production year: Required only for rice and brown rice (marked according to harvest year as per Annex 4 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Grain Management Act).

▪ Producer: Name, address, and phone number of producer (distributor) or collective

▪ Traceability management number: Issued traceability management number

Prohibition of False Indications
- The following are strictly prohibited (Subparagraph 1 of Paragraph 1 of Article 29 and Subparagraph 5 of Article 2 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act):
· Indication of a non-traceability management item as a traceability management item
· Mixing of a traceability management item with non-traceability management items for sale or in storage for display for sale
- Violation of the above regulations is grounds for imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to KRW 30 million (Subparagraph 1 of Article 119 and E. of Article 2 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
