Renewing Your Driver's License
Purpose and Schedule
- Persons who hold driver’s licenses must renew their driver's license every 10 years (every 5 years if they are 65 or older but below 75, every 3 years if they are 75 or older, and every 3 years if they are blind in one eye and have Class 1 Regular Driver's License, at the time of passing the driver's license exam) after acquiring it. (Article 87(1) of the Road Traffic Act)

Submitting driver's license renewal application form
- The driver who acquired the driver’s license shall submit the required documents to the commissioners of city/province police agencies within the license renewal period (Article 87(1) of the “Road Traffic Act,” Article 53 of the “Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act,” and Article 81 of the “Enforcement Rules of the Road Traffic Act”).

Inspection Period

- Initial Period: Ten years from the date of passing the driver’s license test. (However, it shall be three years for people aged over 65 and below 75 and people blind in one eye with a first-class common driver’s license). The tenth year shall be from January 1st to December 31st (Article 87(1), subparagraph 1 of the “Road Traffic Act”). - Latter Period: Ten years from the previous driver’s license renewal date. (However, it shall be five years for people aged over 65 and below 75, three years for people aged 75 and older, and people blind in one eye with a first-class common driver’s license). The tenth year shall be from January 1st to December 31st (Article 87(1), subparagraph 1 of the “Road Traffic Act”). - Applicant of Driver’s License Renewal Extension: three months within the extension expiration date (Article 55(3) of the “Enforcement Decree of the Road Traffic Act”)

Required Documents (Article 81 of the “Enforcement Rules of the Road Traffic Act”)

① Application for Issuance of Renewed Driver’s License (Enclosure Form No. 59 of the “Enforcement Regulations of the Road Traffic Act”) ② Present ID (May identify by comparing the applicant’s fingerprint if he/she agrees) ③ One photo ※ If the foreign/overseas Korean applicant disagrees in submitting his/her residential information in Korea or Korean residence report certificate indicated on the foreign registration certificate through the Regulations on Sharing Administrative Information according to Article 36 of the “E-Government Act,” he/she shall submit the corresponding data. ※ The applicant shall return his/her existing driver’s license when receiving the new license.

Penalized when breached
|
If failing to issue renewal during the driver’s license renewal period, The driver shall be penalized with a fine not exceeding KRW 200 thousand (Article 160(2), subparagraph 7 of the “Road Traffic Act”).
