Meat Product Labeling
Indication of Origin
- Meat products must be labeled as a domestic or import product (including meat produced from imported cattle bred in Korea for less than 6 months after arrival at a quarantine station). For an import product, the exporting country must be indicated in brackets. For a domestic beef product produced from imported cattle, the exporting country must be indicated in brackets (Paragraph 2 of Article 51 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act and Article 3 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
Indication of Meat Types
- Meats are divided into beef and pork. Domestic beef is divided into Korean beef, dairy cattle meat, and beef cattle meat; one of these classifications must be indicated in brackets after the indication of origin (Paragraph 1 of Article 4 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
- In the classification of domestic beef, "Korean beef" refers to the meat of Korean cattle, "dairy cattle meat" refers to the meat of calved heifers, and "beef cattle meat" refers to the meat of beef cattle, cross-breed cattle, oxen, uncalved heifers, and import cattle bred for more than 6 months after arrival at a quarantine station (Paragraph 2 of Article 4 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
Names of Meat Cuts for Distinction in Sale
- Beef and pork are divided by the size of the cut into large and small cuts (Paragraph 1 of Article 5 and Attached Table 1 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
Signage for the Sale of Meat
- When meat is packaged in a plastic material and sold, a printed sticker can be affixed to the packaging or the plastic material itself can be printed to indicate meat for sale (Paragraph 1 of Article 9 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
- When meat is placed in a display case without packaging and sold, the signage for sale of meat specified in Attached Table 3 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards can be installed at the front of the meat being sold in place of a label (Paragraph 2 of Article 9 of the Beef/Pork Labeling Method and Part Classification Standards).
