What is a marine product?
What is a marine product?
- A marine product is the product (salt excluded) of industrial activities in which marine animals and plants are captured, extracted, or grown (Item B of Subparagraph 1 of Paragraph 1 of Article 2 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
Management of Marine Products
- The government operates systems such as indication of origin, the traceability system, eco-friendly marine product certification, HACCP, marine product quality certification, geographic indication, and GMO marine product indication to control and improve the quality of marine products while ensuring their stability, and is supporting the development of the marine product processing industry.
Standards of Marine Products
- The Minister of Oceans and Fisheries can set packaging specifications and grade specifications of marine products to improve product quality, enhance the efficiency of distribution, and achieve fair trade (Paragraph 1 of Article 5 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
- Packaging specifications include trade units, packaging measurements, packaging materials, packaging methods, packaging designs, and indications. Grade specifications include the size, form, color, freshness, dryness, and selection of different products, and the quality ratings of top, high, and average (Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3 of Article 2 of the Standards of Marine Products).
Method of Shipping and Indication of Standard Products
- When shipping marine products that meet the standards, "Standard product" must be indicated on the outside of the packaging along with the ① product name, ② place of origin, ③ product type, ④ grade, ⑤ weight (actual weight), and ⑥ name/phone number of the producer (Paragraph 2 of Article 5 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act and Paragraph 2 of Article 7 of the Enforcement Regulations of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
Prohibition of the Sale of Mixed Standard and Non-standard Products
- Mixing of marine products indicated as standard products with marine products or processed marine products that are not standard products for sale, storage, or display is prohibited (Subparagraph 1 of Paragraph 2 of Article 29 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
- Violation of the above regulation is grounds for imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won (Item A of Subparagraph 2 of Article 119 of the Agricultural and Fishery Products Quality Control Act).
